Chapter 06
The fridge: choose it first
Why the biggest under-counter fridge we could fit was worth the space.
We would choose the large fridge again
The extra refrigerated space means more fresh food, fewer grocery stops, and more freedom to stay away from towns. For full-time living, that trade was absolutely worth it.
Ventilation and service access
Our original cabinet did not move enough air around the fridge, so we later added ventilation openings. Check the requirements for your exact refrigerator: airflow, clearances, compressor ventilation, and access for service. Do not borrow generic clearance numbers from another build.
Door swing matters
We reversed our fridge door so it interacted better with the kitchen. Before buying, check the hinge direction, whether it is reversible, the full door swing, the aisle, and nearby drawers.
