Chapter 11
Mattress selection
Why a normal full-size mattress mattered, and the dimensions beyond width and length.
A normal mattress was part of the brief
We use a regular full/double, 8-inch memory-foam mattress bought during the build in Vermont. It fits without trimming, cut corners, or a custom shape. That means familiar bedding and a straightforward replacement path.
The mattress has a cooling effect we genuinely appreciate. It barely registered as a priority in Vermont, but became much more valuable on hot nights in Mexico and Central America. Together with airflow below and our sleeping-area marine fan, it has kept the permanent bed comfortable for us.
Measure the mattress as part of the room
Check its actual length, width, and thickness; available headroom; compression against the walls; bedding clearance; ventilation; and comfort. Mattress thickness changes both sleeping comfort and the amount of space left above it.
