Chapter 12
How high should the bed be?
Balance entry and headroom above against storage and utility space below.
Our bed is high on purpose
A lower bed would be easier to enter and leave more headroom above. We chose a high bed because the volume underneath had to become our garage and mechanical area. It holds an approximately 39-gallon freshwater tank, water pump and accumulator, water heater, EcoFlow electrical system, 10 kWh of battery storage, tools, beach and outdoor equipment, general storage, and drawers.
Choose height from both directions
List everything that must fit below before choosing a height. Then add the platform and mattress and test the space above. Measure sitting headroom, ceiling structures, lights or fans, and the real route into bed. People with mobility limitations, small children, older dogs, or limited headroom may choose a different balance.
