Lightweight versus overbuilt

Our bed is deliberately simple

The core structure uses support already integrated into the surrounding walls, three metal beams and brackets, ½-inch plywood, normal fasteners, and paint. It does not use a giant timber frame. The strength comes from the parts doing the right jobs together.

In a van, every 'I'll just make it thicker' decision joins every other one. Extra weight affects payload, axle loading, fuel use, handling, and the total build.

Efficient does not mean underbuilt

The aim is a clear load path with adequate parts and secure connections, not the least material you can get away with. Structural support, spans, hardware, expected loads, and vehicle movement still have to be treated seriously.
