Chapter 02
How the system adapts
The rack is the common piece. The bracket is the adapter.
The padded surfboard crossbars are the reusable core of this setup. Our van used awning or factory-rail mounting rather than the connection expected by generic crossbars, so compatible awning brackets bridged the rail and the surfboard bars.
That is what makes the concept useful beyond our ProMaster: the board rides on the same style of padded crossbars, while the mounting bracket or adapter connects those bars to the roof system already on the van.
Our ProMaster example
Our setup used 54-inch bars. That is a detail of our rack; bar length and placement should suit the board and roof layout you are building around.

Van roof-rack system
The rack is the common piece. The mounting bracket is the adapter that connects it to a rail, platform or roof-rack system when needed.
