How we built the internal flares

Our build sequence

We established the sleeping width first, then built each recess around the existing bunk window. The exact recess dimensions and framing sizes are not documented, so this is our sequence rather than a cut list.

1. 1Establish the width needed at mattress height.
2. 2Build the wooden frame around each window and recess.
3. 3Fit the ¼-inch plywood back.
4. 4Transfer the existing window location accurately.
5. 5Use the window template to trace the opening.
6. 6Cut the opening with a jigsaw.
7. 7Test-fit the panel and opening.
8. 8Add thin foam padding.
9. 9Apply upholstery fabric.
10. 10Add the upholstered window trim.
11. 11Attach the recess to framing already installed in the walls.

A useful transfer trick

One technique we used was placing screws as reference points so their locations could be transferred onto the plywood. With those references established, we could position the window template and trace the opening. The important part is controlled location transfer and repeated test fitting before finishing the panel.
