Chapter 11

Layer 5: awning and parking

Shade the metal

The awning blocks direct sun from a large side panel and windows, reducing conducted/radiant heat before theA/C must remove it.

Why optional

It only helps the side it shades and requires controllable parking orientation. Wind, rain, narrow streets andcampsite rules can make deployment unsafe or impossible.

Parking strategy

When practical, minimize afternoon sun on windshield and hottest unshaded wall, seek overhead shade withoutsacrificing solar/airflow goals, and consider where the condenser rejects heat.

Awning: choose the correct size. Use the manufacturer wind limits and retract it before leaving or weatherchanges.

System rule

Do not judge a cooling upgrade at the vent. Judge it by the hottest occupied zone, humidity, energy usedand whether the system can recover that energy safely.

CHAPTER CHECK

• I can explain which heat path this step addresses.• I measured its effect at front, middle and rear - not only by touch.• I added its power, failure mode, maintenance and safety action to the system plan.
