Chapter 19

Freeze protection

Freezing breaks systems

Water expands as it freezes. Pumps, filter bowls, check valves, mixers and heater heat exchangers can crack before a large tank. Insulation slows heat loss; it does not create heat.

Best architecture

Keep tanks, pump, filters and lines inside conditioned space and away from exterior skin. Minimize outside penetrations. Heated pads and trace must be approved, thermostatically controlled, correctly powered and bonded to the tank/pipe as directed.

Winterize

Isolate and drain tank/heater, open low points, clear fixtures and protect pump/filter housings. If using compressed air or non-toxic RV/boat antifreeze, follow every component and heater manual; never use automotive antifreeze.

Travel operation

Monitor the coldest compartment, heat while driving if safely designed, carry jug water, fill when facilities are open and drain vulnerable exterior sections before overnight freezes.

Build rule

If you cannot reach it, isolate it, drain it and explain its pressure/temperature or water-quality job, it is not ready to hide behind a wall.

CHAPTER CHECK

• I can explain the purpose and failure mode of each item in this chapter. • I know which manufacturer limit or water-quality claim controls my choice. • I added the valve, access, drain, measurement or maintenance task to my drawing/checklist.
