Living with a high bed
The compromise felt awkward at first, then became normal.
A compromise, not a mistake
Getting into and out of the high bed initially felt awkward. We got used to it surprisingly quickly, and even Chasey eventually learned to jump up and down herself. The huge storage and utility volume underneath has been worth the tradeoff for us, so we would still make the same general choice.
Mock up your height
As general planning advice, build a temporary box or platform at the proposed step and mattress heights. Can you get in and out comfortably? Sit upright? Can your partner do the same? What about pets? Is a step needed? A physical mock-up will answer those questions faster than a drawing.
